Secretary Rusk To Get Teachin By LYNN ZEISER The questions will ask Rusk wft A facultystudent committee which has serious doubt about US foreign policy in Vietnam and the Dominican Republic willinvite Secretary of State Dean Rusk to speak at a Teachin beginning at 800 tomorrow night in Bryant Lecture nan Speaking will be seniors Bob Kuttner and Phil Ehrensaft and Arthur Wright instructor ofeconomics The committee composedchiefly of graduating honors students and headed by College senior Phil Ehrensaft will present Rusk with a document stating their views and containing questions on topics of major foreign policy interest when he arrives on campustomorrow afternoon to receive anhonorary degree Monday They will then invite him to answer the questions at theTeachin We are hoping for a serious discussion of issues rather than textbook answers Tim Craine former president of StudentCouncil and member of the committee commented Faculty Lacks Quorum Postpones Activist Vote Lack of a quorum at the meet ing or me general iauuuyjulsday forestalled consideration of College recognition of thestudent magazine the Activist and the Oberlin Student Cooperative Association OSCA which would sell beer in the Rathskeller Although there was no June meeting of the general faculty scheduled the faculty of theCollege of Arts and Sciences at their regular meeting June 1 passed a resolution calling for a special session The two proposals hadoriginally been tabled from the Maymeeting However the faculty noted that the chairmen of theStudentFaculty Publications Committee and the Student AffairsCommittee would not be on campus next fall and requested that theunfinished business be settled before they left President Carr sent out a letter to faculty explaining that he would call the meeting butreluctantly because many faculty would have left by that time About 40 per cent of the faculty came to the meeting Last year in June in anunprecedented action President Carr vetoed a Student Councilexpenditure of 500 to help theActivist a studentmanagedperiodical of controversy and opinion Students objected violently to this i i r l i rn An SEdilorial Unfortunately it seems many College alumni parents students and friends misunderstand the intent and purpose of tomorrow nights teachin It is not an attempt to embarrass the College or the Secretary of State The teachin is not being exploited by subversive elements for ther own diabolical ends It is not an irresponsibly organized gathering but rather represent one of the most responsible means of expressing discontent that the academic community possesses We urge everyone on campus now to attend if possible attend with an open and questioning mind The College teachin should provide an extremely valuable educative se rvice of the nations other marathon teachins have so far The Review strongly opposes further extension of the ar In Vietnam but we are equally disturbed by the Johnson Administrations sdence and failure to explain why we are at war there Secretary of State Rusk could be presented with no better opportunity to explain the Administrations policies and to clarity his statements regarding the role of the academic conununity m the national debate over Vietnam He can clarify the purpose of the war just exactly where the war is leading now and what the United States wants out of it and at the same time he canexPlain Administration responses to the academic commun tyscriticism We hope that Mr Rusk realizes that there are hund eds of concerned individuals here who have been protesting because they have very honest questions about the drift of our governments actions they have not been duped by communists It would certainly be unfortunate if Mr Rusk decides that he cannot come to Oberlin or declines to speak at the tcacnin While the teachin has evolved into a very useful etonal tool it must not be forgotten that some of the program planners originally proposed protesting the awarding of an honorarydecree tHlr Rusk As a compromise plan the teachm necessarily lose some of the nature of protest which an actualdeinoutntion would have had but we cannot overlook the ct that the Board of Trustees By JEFF LIEBMAN Members of the classes of 64 and 65 have opened a drive to elect A M Pete Guest 63 to the Board of Trustees in September 1966 Spearheading the drive is an ad hoc committee of student leaders of the classes of 64 and 65 Vietnam and in the Dominican ICepuDiic ana arc iMunmauj disturbed at his intolerantcriticism of the academic community We believe that an honorary degree should not be given topersons who have aroused such criticism in the CollegeCommunity However because Mr Rusk was selected many months ago we do not feel that Mr Rusk should now be denied a degree We urge that in the future astudentfacultyadministration committee will make degreeselections Hopefully the committee will select nominees who reflect the spirit and beliefs of theOberlin Community After a heated debate in special executive session last Saturday Council voted to sponsor College junior Rich Koritz to the World Youth Festival to be held inAlgiers Algeria at the end of July Council appropriated 225 from the Conference Fund to help cover his expenses The World Youth Festival is theoretically a nonpoliticalbiannual event The last festivalattended by 18000 youths was held in Helsinki Finland in 1961 Former NSA committeechairman Dave Steinberg who had publicized the festival in late April noted that it was usually less than unbiased as many Communist block countries send large delegations and that in the past it has received financial support from Moscow Koritz appeared at the last scheduled meeting of Council to request the money PaulOsterman freshman PSL stated that the appropriation was passed843 after a tense debate Council later realized however heexninined that a majority of Coun cil nine votes are required for appropriations from
